Baseball In Paradise!!!

Aloha baseball fans! Kala Kaaihue coming to you from Honolulu, HI home of the Honolulu Sharks and the Hawaii Winter Baseball League. Here’s a little background info about me…I was born and raised here in Kailua, HI on the island of Oahu. I signed as a first baseman with the Atlanta Braves in June 2005 from South Mountain Junior College in Tempe, AZ. I have played with 5 minor league affiliates with the Braves organization in the past 3 1/2 years. Most recently, I’m proud to say I was part of the 2008 Southern League Championship team, the Mississippi Braves. I also have a brother in the Kansas City Royals organization who made his ML debut this past season as a September call-up. It’s been an exciting year and I’m especially excited to be playing this winter in front of family and friends here in my hometown.

The winter league started on September 27th and its been great getting to know the rest of the Sharks. We’ve got a talented group of players from different organizations including the Mets, Phillies, Rockies, Cardinals, Indians, and Braves. Along with MLB teams, we’ve also got a handful of guys from Japan and Korean proffessional leagues. Although I’ve learned some spanish in the past few years, I’m just starting to learn a couple of Japaneese and Korean words. They all seem to be enjoying Hawaii’s beautiful beaches, perfect weather, and of course the local food. If anyone was trying to gain weight for next years season, they came to the right place. The winter league will last six weeks ending on November 16th.  I’m glad I have the opportunity to play this winter with so many talented prospects in this league.

Aside from baseball, I’m happy to be home watching football and volleyball at the University of Hawaii. I have some friends and highschool teammates on the football team and my younger sister, Elizabeth Kaaihue is a sophmore on the #6th ranked Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Team. Other than that, everything here in Hawaii is going great. Well I better get going to the field….Aloha!
